The Gap Between Understanding and Mastery

Between 'I understand this' and 'I can do this' lies a long, quiet stretch of deliberate practice.

Explanation Is Not Competence

Reading a clear explanation makes it dangerously easy to feel a sense of mastery. Yet the moment you close the book and step away from the prompts, the problem feels completely unfamiliar again. Understanding sets the direction; practice reveals the gaps.

Making Feedback Concrete

Shrink the goal to a verifiable physical or cognitive unit: articulate a concept without glancing at your notes, solve a problem from scratch, or reliably execute a movement mechanic during training.

Leaving Margin for Review

After each session, note where the breakdown happened, why it occurred, and what variable to adjust next time. Real progress almost always emerges from these modest, unglamorous calibrations.
